The Cubs recalled infielder Tommy La Stella from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, and he was in the starting lineup for the series finale against the Pirates, playing second base and batting seventh.

Tommy La Stella is in his second season with the Cubs after he was acquired from Atlanta, November 16, 2014, with an international signing bonus slot (No. 4) for right-handed pitcher Arodys Vizcaino and three international signing bonus slots (Nos. 2, 3, 4) ... injuries limited to him 33 games for Chicago last season after he had made his big league debut with the Braves in 2014. Led National League rookies with 36 walks and a .328 on-base percentage in 93 games with Atlanta in 2014 ... compiled a .984 fielding percentage (6 E/368 TC) in 88 games at second base. Has hit .254 (98-for-386) with 22 doubles, a triple, two homers and 42 RBI in 126 career big league games between the Braves and Cubs ... has walked 41 times compared to 47 strikeouts. Owns a .320 batting average (346-for-1,082) with 162 runs, 68 doubles, 15 triples, 22 home runs and 176 RBI in 307 career minor league games. Drew more walks than strikeouts in four-straight seasons in the minors, 2012-15. Entered the 2014 campaign rated as Atlanta's ninth best prospect by Baseball America. Was named the 2013 Mississippi Braves Most Valuable Player after leading the team with a .343 batting average and a .422 on-base percentage. In 2012, he was honored as the MiLB.com Organization All-Star of the Year with the Braves Gulf Coast Rookie League team and Class A Lynchburg. Tommy La Stella batted .333 (14-for-42) in his final 23 games dating to September 2 after missing a majority of the season with right rib cage inflammation ... all told, appeared in 33 games for Chicago, hitting .269 (18-for-67) with six doubles and one homer. His .333 average from September 2 through season's end ranked second on the Cubs, trailing only Starlin Castro (min. 40 at-bats). Played 14 games (11 starts) at second base and 12 games (six starts) at third base ... combined to log a .981 fielding percentage (1 E/52 TC). Batted .375 (6-for-16) off the bench compared to a .235 average (12-for-51) in 17 starts. Connected on his second career home run and first with the Cubs, September 2 vs. Cincinnati, a solo shot in the third inning. Enjoyed a career-high eight-game hitting streak, September 15-23 ... hit .600 (9-for-15) with three doubles and six RBI. Appeared in two games before he landed on the 15-day disabled list, April 14 (retroactive to April 9), with right rib cage inflammation ... made the start at second base, Opening Night, April 5. Began a rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Tennessee, May 15 ... re-injured his side after being hit by a pitch, May 17 vs. Jackson. Began the season with Triple-A Gwinnett before making his major league debut in late May...Hit .251 (80-for-319) with 22 runs, 16 doubles, one triple, one homer and 31 RBI in 93 games for the Braves...Led N.L. rookies with 36 walks and a .328 on-base percentage (min. 300 plate appearances)...Made his major league debut, May 28 at Boston, going 2-for-4 … recorded his first-career big league hit off John Lackey...Posted 20 multi-hit games, including four three-hit games (last: July 29 @ Dodgers)...Batted .311 (19-for-61) against southpaws compared to a .236 mark (61-for-258) against righties...Hit .300 (21-for-70) with 30 RBI with runners in scoring position...Went 6-for-11 (.545) with the bases loaded...Clubbed his first and only big league homer, August 8 vs. Washington, a solo shot off Stephen Strasburg...In 47 Triple-A contests, hit .293 (49-for-167) with 18 runs, six doubles, one homer and 23 RBI...Drew 25 walks while striking out just 14 times, contributing to a .384 on-base percentage...Batted .328 (19-for-58) when he was behind in the count in the minors.

Opened the season with High-A Lynchburg and hit .555 (11-for-20) with a .690 on-base percentage in seven games before making his Double-A debut following a promotion to Mississippi on 5/6...Claimed Mississippi Braves Most Valuable Player honors after leading the team with a .343 batting average and a .422 on-base percentage...He appeared in 81 games for the club and ranked tied for third in doubles and was fifth with 97 hits...The July Player of the Month for the M-Braves hit .349 (29-for-83) with four doubles, 11 RBI, four stolen bases and nine runs scored.
